How to choose a French-speaking therapist in Sydney

Language matters in therapy, but it is only one part of finding the right professional.

Check professional status clearly

Australian professional titles and overseas qualifications are not interchangeable. Ask how the practitioner is registered in Australia, where they trained and how they describe their current scope of practice.

Ask about experience relevant to you

A therapist may work primarily with individuals, couples, children or families. Relevant experience is more useful than a long list of techniques with little explanation.

Notice how the first conversation feels

You should be able to ask about confidentiality, fees, cancellations, therapeutic approach and what happens if the work does not feel helpful. A good fit includes both professional competence and the sense that you can think and speak freely.

French, English or both?

Some people prefer to speak only French; others move between languages. In bilingual couples, the ability to work flexibly in both languages may be particularly useful.
